In this economy, many of us need years and years and years to save up for a down payment for our first home (some might not even get there at all). So, in the meantime, we rent. However, the market is full of overpriced shoeboxes and toxic landlords, swearing their crumbling walls are actually signs of "charming vintage character." To warn each other what to look out for, people are posting the nastiest practices and conditions they’ve encountered online. The subreddit 'Trash Rentals' (whose name we are paraphrasing a little to keep it safe for work) is one of the places that shines a light on just how bad things can get.

Landlord Turned Off Electricity In Middle Of Winter Last Year. My Daughter Was 3 Months Old And Wife Was Sick. Tribunal Hit Her With An $11k Bill
The experiences seen in these images are universal. Nearly 3 in 5 (58%) renters have disliked a landlord at some point, according to a 2024 LendingTree survey of more than 2,000 respondents.
Gen X, ages 44 to 59, were the most likely generation to say so, at 61%, while Gen Z, ages 18 to 27, fell on the opposite end of the spectrum, with only 51% having one they didn’t like. (Perhaps because they've simply spent less time out and about.)
The top reasons were maintenance issues (68%), poor communication (53%), and a lack of respect or professionalism (42%), along with issues like rent increases (38%) and privacy violations (22%).

Given the tension-causing issues that renters noted, almost a third of them — 30% — said they don't trust their current landlord.
What's more, at least 1 in 5 renters — 21% — have had a legal dispute with a landlord.
Of those, 38% said they won the dispute, while 28% lost. Another 24% reported the dispute was dropped, while the matter is still ongoing for an unlucky 10%.

While the vast majority of renters — 82% — say they've never been evicted, 18% have, and of the latter group, more than two-thirds, or 68%, say they were evicted unfairly.
The most common cause of eviction among the survey respondents was not paying rent on time (30%), though almost a quarter (24%) said they were evicted because the landlord wanted to reclaim the property for their own use. Disturbingly, 18% believe they were kicked out due to discrimination.

Some believe they didn't even get a fair chance to begin with. While 67% of home renters said they don’t think they’ve ever been discriminated against during the application process, a shocking 33% do.
Male respondents (36%) were slightly more likely than female respondents (30%) to believe a landlord has potentially discriminated against them, and Gen Zers (42%) were far more likely to feel this way than Baby Boomers, ages 60 to 78 (18%).

Given the choice between renting from an individual and a corporation, almost half of the respondents, or 48%, said they'd rather rent from a person.
Less than 1 in 5 (17%) would prefer to rent from a corporation, while the remaining 35% said it makes no difference to them.

More than half of renters, or 57%, believe there should be some form of government restriction on both individuals and companies buying multiple houses.
A quarter (25%) claimed it should be illegal to own more than 10 single-family homes, while 20% said it should be illegal to own more than one. 12% placed the limit much higher and would allow moguls to buy up to 100.
The other 43% of respondents said there should be no such government restriction.

Almost two-thirds of the surveyed renters 63% believe they're paying fair market value for their property. Still, 37% believe they aren’t — and most renters couldn’t afford much of a hike.
But despite how tight and sometimes unfair things are for renters, most of them — 60% — have never negotiated the terms of their lease.
Others have asked for price changes (22%), lease length changes (14%), or upfront discounts (7%).
As we can see from the pictures, they probably had a legitimate reason for it!

“A Comment From A Baby Boomer”
Boomer here - the only thing I agree with in this tirade is that people should not be expected to sell a home they've lived and raised a family in, so that someone who has a family can buy it. I rent, but if I'd been able to buy a place, pay to upkeep it for 30-40 years, then I sure as hell wouldn't be giving it up.

Not proud of not, but landlords don't care. Especially the really bad ones. They see it as a challenge.

And that folks is a snapshot of the housing situation in Australia. Think carefully before you decide to emigrate. Of course, these entries are from the main population centres which is where everyone wants to live and work. You can of course find cheaper rents in houses in the middle of the Simpson Desert for example
Are there rental properties, or any houses at all in the middle of the Simpson Desert ? I'm sure it would be peaceful there, but a bloody long way to the nearest Coles or Woollies.
Load More Replies...Obviously most, if not all are in Australia It will be interesting to see If the recent election result makes any difference. I for one will not be holding my breath.
The direct cause of why the world is in this situation are policies that funnel money to the wealthy. When America had a strong economic system in place where corporations and the wealthy paid their fair share, the economy and society were thriving. Once Reagan got into office, he reversed that. Money was and is being redistributed towards the 1%. If the tax brackets were the way they were before Reagan, we would have no homeless, everyone would go to college affordably, healthcare would be so much better and cheaper, everyone could afford a house and a car, crime would be far lower, the minimum wage would be at least $35/hour, and so much more in the positive. But things only keep getting worse.
I don't rent, but I sympathise massively with those who do. Most landlords are just leeches. What other "investment" has guaranteed income? Most investments carry risk; the market can go up or down, yet landlords expect their investment to be risk-free. Mortgage rates go up? Rent goes up. It shouldn't work like that. You took a risk on the mortgage, and that risk should be yours alone. The property is still an investment, it's still going to appreciate in value over the long term.
I don't know what your experience of renting is or what country you are in but much of what you have said is simply untrue. I rent two properties out and I resent being called a leech by someone who knows nothing about me. I rent 2, two bedroom houses out for £750 per month each, that is more than the mortgage on those properties but not by much. As well as the mortgage I have to pay estate agent fees, building insurance and landlord insurance to cover things like boiler replacement, structural maintenance and emergency repairs. The income from my properties is almost zero at the moment due to the sharp rise in interest rates. Contrary to what you wrote, I cannot increase the rent I charge when interest rates increase, I can only increase the rent at the end of each tenancy period and I can only raise it in line with the rent increase of social housing, which is set by the current CPI rate of inflation.

I live in the US. I am astounded at some of the properties in Australia. At the end of this article I am ready to vomit. What is this world coming to????
Years ago, I was a foreign exchange student in a small American college town, looking for accommodation. One place that I looked at: first of all, the entire house was smelling of cat p**s. One of my potential room mates was showing me around. When we came to my potential room, I found out that it was a mattress on the floor, in the hallway, behind a wall made of cardboard. They wanted a sizeable monthly rent for it.
